HANDY HINTS

Plumbing:

Burst pipes and joints-

• Cut off the water flow to the burst pipe by turning off the water mains. In most cases this will be located at the front of the property with the water meter. While in home units it is usually in the cupboard under the kitchen sink. Sometimes the mains may not have a handle on it and you may have to use pliers in an emergency.
• Wrap towels around the burst and place a bowl or bucket under it if possible.
• Ring for a plumber.

Leaks-

• Place a bowl under the leak.
• Cut off the water flow (as above)
• Call a plumber.
• The smallest leak can do lots of damage to your property if left unattended.

Overflows-

• If a cistern on a toilet overflows, turn off the water supply. You should find the tap near the ‘S’ bend of the toilet.
• Fit a new washer to the ball-valve or bend the ball-valve arm to lower the water level.
• Or call a plumber or handyman.

Hotwater system-

• If a hot water system starts to boil and rumble, the thermostat has failed.
• Turn off the power and water supply to the heater.
• Call a plumber.

Electricity:

Blown fuses-

• Turn the power off at the main fuse box.
• Never try to trace an electrical fault with the power switched on.
• If trouble is caused by a faulty appliance, disconnect it from the power supply.
• Fit a new fuse of the correct value or flick the circuit breaker back to on.
• If an appliance is causing trouble, unplug it, have it checked or throw it away.
• In any other cases, turn off the power at the mains and call an electrician.
• Electricity is dangerous! If you don’t know, don’t touch, call an electrician.

Gas:

Safety precautions-

• Make sure you know where the main gas tap is located and how to use it. In most cases it is near the gas meter. It is turned off when the score line, on top of the valve is at right angles to the gas pipe. Most of the time, the lever or handle will also be at right angles to the pipework in the “off “ position. If the mains does need to be turned of, remember to relight any gas pilot lights when supply is restored.

If gas smell is strong-

• Turn off the main gas tap.
• Call the gas company immediately, day or night.
• Do not attempt to trace gas leak with a naked flame.
• Extinguish any naked flames and switch off electric heaters.
• Do not enter a room where the smell of gas is very strong: the build up of gas may over power you.
• If anyone is overcome by gas fumes, move them into the open air, immediately send for an ambulance. Give mouth to mouth resuscitation if necessary.

If gas smell is slight-

• Often the cause of escape will be obvious- a pilot light or stove burner which has gone out.
• Turn off the pilot light or burner concerned.
• Switch off any naked flames or electric heaters that may be in the same room.
• Open windows and wait for smell to go.
• Relight pilots or burners.
• If gas smell persists, turn gas main off and call gas company immediately.
• Gas is dangerous! If you don’t know, call the gas company.

Fire:

If you can tame the fire yourself-

• Use water on most fires.
• Do not use water on fats and oils. In this case smother fire with a lid, plate, damp towel or fire blanket.
• In all fires involving electricity, such as a faulty appliance, switch off the power at the mains. You can then use water or a fire extinguisher.
• If a television catches fire, smother it with a blanket or fire blanket.

Chimneys-

• Do not attempt to put out the fire yourself. Call the fire brigade.
• Move anything from the immediate fireplace area.
• Close doors and windows to reduce ventilation to the room the chimney is in.

If a serious fire breaks out-

• Get everybody out of the house, closing doors and windows to isolate the fire.
• Call the fire brigade.

Always have an evacuation plan and discuss it with your family. Each house should have a fire blanket and small extinguisher available. And it is law that you have smoke detectors fitted in your home.
