Fire:
If you can tame the fire yourself-
- Use water on most fires.
- Do not use water on fats and oils. In this case smother fire with a lid, plate, damp towel or fire blanket.
- In all fires involving electricity, such as a faulty appliance, switch off the power at the mains. You can then use water or a fire extinguisher.
- If a television catches fire, smother it with a blanket or fire blanket.
Chimneys-
- Do not attempt to put out the fire yourself. Call the fire brigade.
- Move anything from the immediate fireplace area.
- Close doors and windows to reduce ventilation to the room the chimney is in.
If a serious fire breaks out-
- Get everybody out of the house, closing doors and windows to isolate the fire.
- Call the fire brigade.
Always have an evacuation plan and discuss it with your family. Each house should have a fire blanket and small extinguisher available. And it is law that you have smoke detectors fitted in your home.
